ENDLESS JOY WHILE IN DEATH BED

John Sluiter was a young woman who lived in Rochester, Minnesota. She suffered from a serious disease known as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)*. Her arms and hands failed to function properly. Her doctors told her that there was no cure for this disease and that she might live just two to five years.

A couple of years later, she had another shock when a needle biopsy of her breast revealed breast cancer. Her breast was removed. She underwent chemotherapy when cancer was detected in the lymph nodes. While she recovered from the cancer, she continued to live with ‘ALS disease’ which caused gradual physical deterioration.

She went through a great ordeal of pain and frustration. Her body and mind failed. But she enjoyed constant presence of God and experienced the comfort of His Words. God gave her strength to go through the painful experiences. God spoke to her through Psalm 73:26 “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever”.

As a result, she had endless joy within, even when she went through such severe pain. Despite her being terminally ill, she testified that she was happy and peaceful. To her curious enquirers who asked, “How could you be happy?” she answered, “The answer is God. I am a child of God, because I belong to Him”.

John Sluiter put her trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, when she was just ten years old. God spoke to her from the book of Isaiah (53:6) “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us have turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all”.

Are you a child of God? If not so, receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior today. He will give you the strength, He will give you the joy and He will give you the peace.

You can be a child of God by trusting in Him, right now!

“As many as received Him, to them He gave power to become the children of GOD, even to them that believe on His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man but of God”.

Note*Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by the degeneration of motor neurons.

THE SHORTEST MAN ON EARTH

Khagendra Thapa Magar, hailing from Nepal has been adjudged by the Guinness World Record as the world’s shortest man in 2010. He is 56 cm (22 inches) tall and weighs just five kgs. He hasn’t grown since he was 11. Imagine an eighteen year old adult with a height of just 22 inches!

No one likes to be like Magar. The Bible speaks about a man named Zacchaeus, who was of little stature. Zacchaeus was a very rich man. He was not only very rich, but was chief among the tax-collectors. But when he wanted to see Jesus, who passed by Jericho one day, he was unable to see Him, because of his small build. Zacchaeus was however determined to see Jesus. An idea struck him. He ran ahead and climbed up on a sycamore tree and waited there to see Jesus, who was to pass by that way.

When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and saw Zacchaeus on the tree and said to him, “Hurry down, Zacchaeus, because I must stay in your house today.” Zacchaeus came down quickly and received Jesus joyfully. There, the seeking saviour met the seeking sinner. Jesus went to Zacchaeus’ house, while the people murmured saying that He had visited to the home of a sinner.

There something amazing happened. A great transformation was taking place in Zacchaeus’ heart. Zacchaeus realized that he was a sinner. He had made a lot of wealth by unfair means, which he realized was not right in the sight of God. The guilt of his sin was crushing him. He could no longer hide it from the Saviour. He wanted to testify, “He said, ‘Lord, the half of my property I give to the poor; and if I have taken anything from any man fraudulently, I restore fourfold.’ Jesus replied, ‘This day salvation is come to this house.’”

Zacchaeus received Jesus, as his Lord and Saviour, repented for his sins and thus received salvation instantly. You and I are all indeed like Zacchaeus, of little stature spiritually, heading towards eternal death! The only way to escape this doom and disaster is to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour and atone for our sins for if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Dear reader, do you have the assurance of salvation? If not, repent for your sins, trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and receive the assurance of salvation right now!

GHAR WAPSI (THE HOME COMING)

There is a story about a young man who took leave of his loving father with his share of inheritance and went to a far country. There he squandered the wealth in sinful pleasures, being away from the watchful eye of his father. A severe famine that followed landed him a slave feeding swine. He was in agonizing hunger and longed to fill his stomach with the husk, the swine feed, but none gave him even the husk. He then remembered his father’s bountiful home, where there was bread enough and to spare. His despicable condition brought him to his senses; then he arose and went to his father.

But the loving father kept waiting for the return of his son. He saw his son from the distance, shamefaced and slow-stepping in dirt and rags, sores and stink. Yet the father’s heart overflowed with compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. The prodigal thought of saying, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you and am no more worthy to be called your son: make me one of your hired servants.” But the loving father met the prodigal half way and before he could ask to be received as a servant, he said, “he was lost and is found.” The father also commanded him to be clothed with the best robe, put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet, and celebrated his home coming.

You and I have strayed from the glorious presence of the loving God and live in sin and are carried away by the passions and pleasures of ‘this far country’. But God does not desire that you and I perish in our sin. And in order to restore us back home unto Himself, God sent His beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ into the world, to bear the punishment of our sins. Lord Jesus Christ thus became sin for us; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. Lord Jesus Christ offered Himself on the cross as the atonement for your sins and my sins. He was buried but rose again on the third day and ascended to heaven and is seated on the right hand of God. He is coming soon to receive us unto Himself. There is no other way for salvation, for there is none other name given among men, save the name of Lord Jesus Christ, whereby you must be saved. Dear reader, God is earnestly awaiting your coming back home trusting Him and with true repentance. When you confess your sins and trust in the Savior, He shall clothe you with the garment of salvation and sup with you and the angels in heaven will rejoice in this solemn event!

THE CROSS OF CHRIST AND ITS CLAIMS

A beautifully designed concrete cross planted in the heart of the city of Mumbai was spared from demolition by the BMC, reported the media recently. The said cross became the favourite object of prayer and worship by Mumbaikers who queued up to access the cross.

Biblically, the Cross does not have any supernatural virtues so as to grant the prayers and petitions of its devotees. The Holy Bible is very clear on this. But the prayers and praises of Christ’s followers are acceptable to God through Christ’s intercession; only through Christ’s intercession and not by any other means and method that our depraved minds design. The Lord Jesus Christ pleads the cause of those who penitently put their trust in the Saviour.

The Cross of Christ represents Christ’s crucifixion for the sake of mankind and through which salvation has been procured. The Cross speaks about the sufferings of Christ. Jesus died on the cursed cross on behalf of the sinners, every man or woman born upon this earth, that whosoever calls upon His name shall receive salvation.

The cross of Christ was the most important focal point in the whole of the activity of the Sovereign God in the salvation of sinners like you and me and everyone. The Cross therefore has become the symbol of salvation. The message of the Gospel of Christ is the message of the Cross of Christ (1 Cor. 1: 17-18; Gal. 3:1; 6:12, 14).

Praying and worshipping the cross irrespective of whether it is silver or gold, wood or cement or any material not only does not please God, but brings God’s wrath, for God is a zealous God and He does not share His glory with the work of man’s hands. Trusting in the Saviour who died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins, yours and mine, and everyone else’s sins could please God indeed and procure salvation. The Bible says, whosoever believes in the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, but God’s wrath remains on him.

Dear reader, has the Cross of Christ been meaningful to you, the way the Holy Scripture teaches? If not receive the message of the Cross right now and be saved right here!

THE PANDEMIC AND THE FACE MASKS

The unexpected outbreak of the pandemic in recent times in many parts of India was alarming. Young and old alike got infected. At least a couple of thousand people lost their lives around the nations of the world within a short span of time. No vaccine has yet been invented to combat this deadly virus. This has created great scare and chaos. When people saw someone coughing or sneezing, for any reason whatever, they ran for cover fearing immediate infection and death. The people were frightened beyond measure. Schools and colleges were closed and many stayed indoors. Those who ventured out wore facemasks, which have become a common sight everywhere.

Yes, you and I are afraid of this deadly virus and of death of course.

Several centuries ago a shepherd boy lived in Israel. He tended his flock day and night in the thick valleys and mountains of Palestine where wild beasts lurked for its prey. As he grew up, he was hounded by a blood thirsty king. This shepherd came face to face with death several times in his life. But he was unaffected. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, he said. Though the terrors of death encompass him, though life’s journey warrants through the dark shadow of the valley of death, and though he carries with him the death warrant, yet he fears no evil. It does not matter to him, for he fears no evil.

Why does he say that he fears no evil even when he passes through the valley of the shadow of death? Because, he says that God is with him. Death cannot separate him from the love of God and therefore he does not fear any evil in physical death. Not only that, he adds ‘the rod and staff of God’ will comfort him. His Word and His Spirit will comfort them that trusts in Him. God has not guaranteed us protection from death but from fear. There is a journey ahead of death to a land where there is neither sorrow nor death. He will take us to that glorious land if we put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God.

Why should you and I trust in Jesus Christ? Because, neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish in eternal hellfire but have eternal life. God sent His Son into the world to save you and me through Him. If you trust in Jesus Christ the Son of God that He died for your sins on the cross, you shall be saved. Are you saved?    (Originally written in 2021)

JESUS, THE INVINCIBLE CONQUEROR

It was a Palm Sunday when the Lord Jesus Christ rode down the slopes of the Olivet and entered the city of Jerusalem triumphantly, just a few days before His crucifixion. He was well aware of what was in store for Him there, and He foretold to His disciples that He shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: and they shall scourge Him, and put Him to death: and on the third day He shall rise again (Luke 18:32-33). In precise fulfillment of the prophecy of Zechariah, at His command, His disciples brought an ass with her colt (Matthew 21:1-3), put on them their clothes and set the Lord thereon, where never man sat.

His triumphal entry was not marked by any kind of show of power and pomp but of meekness and lowliness. Prophet Zechariah said: "Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your King comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt, the foal of an ass" (Zechariah 9:9).

And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the tree and strawed them in the way” (Mark 11:8). Spreading of the garments in the way was the ancient way of recognition of one's royalty (2 Kings 9:13). The mob marched by taking palm branches and shouting "Hosanna!" (John 12:13). Palm branches were the symbol of expression of victory in the Biblical times. Those who led the procession and those who followed shouted saying “Hosanna: Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord: Blessed is the Kingdom of our father David, that comes in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the Highest”, which means “save us, Lord, who lives in Heaven”.

We see that a few days later, the mob cried for His blood, saying, “Crucify Him, Crucify Him”. The Lord Jesus being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, was taken, and by wicked hands crucified and slain… (Acts 2:23-24). He was cut off from the land of the living: for the transgression of His people was He stricken, to save mankind from the jaws of eternal death. The chief priests and the Pharisees were busy securing the sepulchre as best as they could, by sealing the sepulchre and setting a guard with the help of Pilate the Roman governor. But by conquering death, the Lord victoriously rose from the grave on the third day as He had foretold. Jesus said, “No man takes My life from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again” (John 10:18).

All those who confess their sins and trust in the Lord Jesus for their salvation will share in the victory won by Christ over sin and death. Apostle Paul speaks about the victory of the believing Christians. “We shall all be changed at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye that those saints who are dead in Christ would be raised in glory first, followed by those alive in Christ. Then shall be fulfilled the saying, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave where is thy victory?” Dear reader, do you have the hope of eternal life beyond this life on the earth, if not confess your sins and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ right now and be saved.

THE TREASURE HUNT

The Archaeological Survey of India recently began digging in the 19th century Buxar fort in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh, hoping to unearth thousands of tons of gold treasure. After two days of excavation, no gold treasure was discovered, but a brick wall, shards of glass bangles, hopscotch toys and a mud floor was discovered.

The Holy Bible speaks about a sure treasure hid in a field; when a man found it, he hid it, and then in his joy went and sold all that he owned and bought that field. This treasure was so precious to him, that he sold all his possessions to own that treasure. This treasure, as it might seem strange to our readers, is none but the invisible God Himself, by whom were all things created, visible and invisible and He is before all things and in Him dwells all fullness. In Christ Jesus are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge; of grace and peace and righteousness, which are laid up in Christ, and if you and I lay hold on Him, all these shall be yours and mine.

John the Baptist said of the Lord Jesus that of His fullness have all we received, grace for grace. The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. Grace is the kindness and love of God our Saviour towards man, not by man’s works of righteousness. The Law of Moses demands righteousness from man, but under grace, God by his redemptive work confers righteousness on man. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, which is by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

You have to set your eyes and affection on the Lord Jesus Christ, for He is the treasure whom the gospel bids us to possess. He tasted death to confer eternal life for every man. Lord Jesus Christ took our place on the wretched cross and offered his soul an offering for sin; your sin and my sin. Jesus was buried, but rose again on the third day and ascended to heaven. He will come any day and moment!

Dear reader, confess your sins, trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, and come into possession of this great treasure.

CONVERSION OF A PERSECUTER OF CHRIST

Sometime between 31-36 AD. It was an extraordinary mid-day in the life of a young man, a sworn enemy and persecutor of Christ and the infant Christian Church called “The Way”. This young man was on his way to Damascus with his companions for arresting the Christians and committing them to prison. He had the authority of the Chief Priests for the purpose. This young man was none but Saul of Tarsus, a Pharisee, well versed in the Hebrew Old Testament sacred Scriptures. But he made havoc on the infant Church, entering into every house and haling men and women committing them to prison.

As Saul and his men were about to reach the city of Damascus, all of a sudden behold, a bright light from heaven, brighter than the sun surrounded Saul. Immediately, he fell to the ground and heard a voice, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” Saul was overtaken by helplessness and panic and said, “Who are you, Lord?” Saul instantly received the reply, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the pricks”. In that breathtaking moment, Saul saw the risen Saviour, and something extraordinary happened in his heart. The result was amazing! Saul surrendered his heart to the Lord Jesus Christ and followed His instructions.

The risen Saviour said to Saul, “I have appeared to you, for this reason, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you… to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me (Acts 26:12-18), that by the work of the Spirit, the eyes of the understanding of those who are blinded by Satan are enlightened; through the preaching of the Gospel.

Saul's encounter with Jesus Christ transformed his life altogether. He received forgiveness of his sins and experienced the joy of salvation by trusting in the expiative work of Christ on the cross. Saul was no longer a persecutor of the Church. He became a transformed man of God, known as Apostle Paul, the greatest missionary ever known in the history of the Church. He was chosen by God for turning many from darkness to light and to deliver them that are under the power and control of Satan. God used the transformed Paul for delivering millions of souls from the stronghold of Satan and leading them to Christ. Besides, out of twenty-seven books of the New Testament, thirteen came to be written by Apostle Paul alone, which stands as an eloquent testimony to the transforming power of God.

Dear reader, God is willing to transform you too if you commit your life to Jesus. God says, “Come now and let us reason together, though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool. God has permitted a man to reason with Him (Genesis 18:23-32; Exodus 4:1-17; Job 23:3-7; Micah 6:2). The loving God does not desire any to perish in the coming judgment, but all to repent their sins and experience the joy of salvation (2 Peter 3:9).

Dear reader, if you have not yet received the assurance of salvation, repent your sins and receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour right now.
