GHAR WAPSI (THE HOME COMING)

There is a story about a young man who took leave of his loving father with his share of inheritance and went to a far country. There he squandered the wealth in sinful pleasures, being away from the watchful eye of his father. A severe famine that followed landed him a slave feeding swine. He was in agonizing hunger and longed to fill his stomach with the husk, the swine feed, but none gave him even the husk. He then remembered his father’s bountiful home, where there was bread enough and to spare. His despicable condition brought him to his senses; then he arose and went to his father.

But the loving father kept waiting for the return of his son. He saw his son from the distance, shamefaced and slow-stepping in dirt and rags, sores and stink. Yet the father’s heart overflowed with compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. The prodigal thought of saying, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you and am no more worthy to be called your son: make me one of your hired servants.” But the loving father met the prodigal half way and before he could ask to be received as a servant, he said, “he was lost and is found.” The father also commanded him to be clothed with the best robe, put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet, and celebrated his home coming.

You and I have strayed from the glorious presence of the loving God and live in sin and are carried away by the passions and pleasures of ‘this far country’. But God does not desire that you and I perish in our sin. And in order to restore us back home unto Himself, God sent His beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ into the world, to bear the punishment of our sins. Lord Jesus Christ thus became sin for us; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. Lord Jesus Christ offered Himself on the cross as the atonement for your sins and my sins. He was buried but rose again on the third day and ascended to heaven and is seated on the right hand of God. He is coming soon to receive us unto Himself. There is no other way for salvation, for there is none other name given among men, save the name of Lord Jesus Christ, whereby you must be saved. Dear reader, God is earnestly awaiting your coming back home trusting Him and with true repentance. When you confess your sins and trust in the Savior, He shall clothe you with the garment of salvation and sup with you and the angels in heaven will rejoice in this solemn event!

THE OFFENDER AND THE AFFECTIONATE SEEKER

A young girl left her mother and lived waywardly. She lived in sin and was heading to hell. An elderly woman who happened to meet the young girl, advised her to get back to her mother and escape from the wretched life she lived. The girl replied telling that she was too wretched to be accepted back by her Mom. But when the mother heard of it, she forgave her daughter and rushed money for her immediate return.

God, who is more compassionate and loving, looks forward to the return of every man and woman, with repentant hearts without least delay. The loving God stands with His outstretched arms to receive back every penitent sinner.

When Adam fell in sin, God did not tarry in heaven waiting for Adam to come searching for Him. But God immediately rushed to the earth seeking Adam to save him from eternal death. “Adam”, God called man and asked him, “Where are you?” But the man hid himself in the bushes of the garden. Adam dashed to the ground all the blessings and privileges by his disobedience and was attempting to hide from the eyes of his Creator. It should have been Adam’s duty to cry to the Creator for mercy as he was the offender.

But God sought after the offender, “Adam, where are you?” God sought Adam not to send him to hell for his rebellion, but to save him from the punishment for his disobedience, from the torments of eternal hellfire, the rightful place for sinners, the rightful place for you and me. But God does not desire anyone to land in hell, but all to experience the joy of salvation. That is why God sent His only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who took upon Himself the punishment of your sins and my sins on the cross.

What love is this! What compassion is this! What grace is this!

Yes. It is true and worthy of all acceptation that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, you and me. For the very purpose, He bore our sins in His own body on the cross. The Lord Jesus Christ was absolutely holy and sinless and yet He chose our place on the cross to set us free from the punishment of our sin.

Dear reader, if you truly confess your sins to God and believe in your heart, that the Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins, and rose again for your justification, you will receive eternal life right now. May this by your memorable experience!

THE PARABLE OF THE FATHER’S HEART

There was a wealthy Jew in Palestine who had a great household with olive yards and vineyards, sheep and camels and hired servants. He had two sons, who had all the father's provisions available in that wealthy home. However, the younger son being sick of living with his loving father chose no longer to be under his authority. He brazenly demanded his share of the inheritance and his father refused him not. “He gathered all together” and cutting every tie with his father, took his journey to a “far country”, to a world of sin and mirth, away from God and the eyes of his father. The rebellious act of the young man has characteristics of Isaiah's prophetic portrayal of sinners, “all we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way…” (Isaiah 53:6).

Soon he spent all and became penniless. To make matters worse, a mighty famine ravaged the land and he began to be in want. His dire situation forced him to join the citizen of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed the swine, a great disgrace that could happen to the son of a wealthy Jew. The swine was an unclean animal under the Levitical law (Leviticus 11:8), which kept reminding him that he was a lawbreaker and under the judgement of God. The ration provided to the prodigal was scanty that he longed to fill his stomach with the swine feed, but even that was not available, and none pitied him. Running away from the presence of his loving father has brought him to a most shameful and disgraceful experience of feeding the swine.

We see in this narrative, God's amazing kindness and mercy, for the extreme misery brought the prodigal to his right senses. Earlier he was “beside himself”, but now “came to himself”. Then he said, “how many hired servants of my father's house have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!” He composed a statement of repentance (Luke 15:18, 19). Genuine repentance is not confined to shallow words, but to action. In his extremity, there was genuine repentance in his heart. This is of prime necessity for the salvation of every sinner who walks the road of the prodigal.

The prodigal is under the sentence of death just like the older brother is who holds a pharisaic attitude.   The words “…when he was yet a great way off…” speak eloquently about the father's heart, reminiscing about the Love of God, our Saviour. The waiting and watching and yearning of the father focuses our attention on the incredible bounty and generosity of the father, which is the powerful portrayal of the heart of God, our heavenly Father towards the prodigals, you and I (Genesis 3:8, 9).

The father, casting aside his dignity of a wealthy Jew, having had compassion, unashamedly ran, reached his wayward son, embraced him and kissed him tenderly, which reminds us of the Son of God coming on the earth & suffering humiliation and torture and dying on the cursed cross as a criminal for you and for me, prodigals. The prodigal was arrayed with the best robe, the garment of salvation which our heavenly Father clothes us with (Isaiah 61:10; Revelation 7:14), the ring on his hand, signifies an unending relationship to our heavenly Father and shoes on his feet, as a mark as a free man, privilege to stand in His blessed presence in absolute forgiveness and acceptance. The fatted calf is a prize animal reserved for a feast in honour of a special guest.

In the mind of our heavenly Father, there could not be a joyous occasion than when a lost son is found (Luke 15:7). Dear readers come home to God, our Saviour with a repentant heart and bring joy to the heart of God!
