ENDLESS JOY WHILE IN DEATH BED

John Sluiter was a young woman who lived in Rochester, Minnesota. She suffered from a serious disease known as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)*. Her arms and hands failed to function properly. Her doctors told her that there was no cure for this disease and that she might live just two to five years.

A couple of years later, she had another shock when a needle biopsy of her breast revealed breast cancer. Her breast was removed. She underwent chemotherapy when cancer was detected in the lymph nodes. While she recovered from the cancer, she continued to live with ‘ALS disease’ which caused gradual physical deterioration.

She went through a great ordeal of pain and frustration. Her body and mind failed. But she enjoyed constant presence of God and experienced the comfort of His Words. God gave her strength to go through the painful experiences. God spoke to her through Psalm 73:26 “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever”.

As a result, she had endless joy within, even when she went through such severe pain. Despite her being terminally ill, she testified that she was happy and peaceful. To her curious enquirers who asked, “How could you be happy?” she answered, “The answer is God. I am a child of God, because I belong to Him”.

John Sluiter put her trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, when she was just ten years old. God spoke to her from the book of Isaiah (53:6) “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us have turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all”.

Are you a child of God? If not so, receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior today. He will give you the strength, He will give you the joy and He will give you the peace.

You can be a child of God by trusting in Him, right now!

“As many as received Him, to them He gave power to become the children of GOD, even to them that believe on His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man but of God”.

Note*Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by the degeneration of motor neurons.

JESUS THE PASSOVER LAMB

After the pale rays of the setting sun vanished from the land of Goshen in Egypt, the Jewish households killed their Passover Lambs in twilight. It was a few centuries ago, on the 14th day of Nisan that year in the Jewish calendar. The selected lambs were one year old male without blemish. The blood of the slaughtered lambs was to be sprinkled on the doorposts of their houses and the meat roasted and eaten without breaking any of its bones (Exodus 12:46). The LORD would pass through the land that night and slay all the first-born of the Egyptian households. When the LORD sees the blood on the door posts of the houses of the children of Israel, He will pass over them and all the inmates of those houses would be spared from death.

And the children of Israel observed the commandment of the Lord and stayed indoors on that dreadful night. The LORD smote all the firstborn in the Egyptian homes including Pharaoh that sat on the throne. And there was a great cry in the land of Egypt that night, for there was not a single house where there was no death. That event marked the redemption of the Hebrews from Egyptian bondage and death. The slain lambs were the prototype of Jesus Christ, who came on this earth about sixteen hundred years later.

Exactly on the 14th day of Nisan, at the age of Thirty Three, the Lord Jesus Christ, our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed on the cross (1 Corinthians 5:7). He shed His precious blood for the remission of your sins and my sins – to save you and me from the slavery of sin, Satan and death. John the Baptist introduced this Lamb of God (John 1:29). Apostle Peter, refers the precious blood of Christ, “as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:19). Apostle John speaks about a Lamb seen in heaven as if it had been slain (Revelation 5:6). The blood of this Lamb is to be applied and appropriated by the sinner - you and I to escape from the soon coming judgement.

When our Lord was on the earth, His life was under intense scrutiny by the Pharisees, Sadducees, the scribes, and the religious leaders, but none could find any sin or blemish in His life (2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 John 3:5; 1 Peter 1:18-19, John 19:4). He committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth (1 Peter 2:22). The Father was well pleased in the spotless life of His beloved Son. As prophesied, “a bone of him was not broken” (John 19:36). He thus fulfilled all the criteria of the Passover Lamb, who is ordained of God to deliver you and I from eternal death! You and I rightfully deserve to be cast into the hell fire for our sins. But God in His grace and mercy sent His beloved Son, Lord Jesus Christ into this world in order that we shall receive the remission of our sins by His shed blood on the cross.

Dear reader, if you have not yet received the Lord Jesus Christ as your Passover Lamb and applied and appropriated His precious blood into your heart by faith, you may do so right now; lest you enter eternal death – everlasting torments in the fiery furnace of hail shall pass over from your life and you shall receive life everlasting. Are you washed by the precious blood of the Passover Lamb?

THE SHORTEST MAN ON EARTH

Khagendra Thapa Magar, hailing from Nepal has been adjudged by the Guinness World Record as the world’s shortest man in 2010. He is 56 cm (22 inches) tall and weighs just five kgs. He hasn’t grown since he was 11. Imagine an eighteen year old adult with a height of just 22 inches!

No one likes to be like Magar. The Bible speaks about a man named Zacchaeus, who was of little stature. Zacchaeus was a very rich man. He was not only very rich, but was chief among the tax-collectors. But when he wanted to see Jesus, who passed by Jericho one day, he was unable to see Him, because of his small build. Zacchaeus was however determined to see Jesus. An idea struck him. He ran ahead and climbed up on a sycamore tree and waited there to see Jesus, who was to pass by that way.

When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and saw Zacchaeus on the tree and said to him, “Hurry down, Zacchaeus, because I must stay in your house today.” Zacchaeus came down quickly and received Jesus joyfully. There, the seeking saviour met the seeking sinner. Jesus went to Zacchaeus’ house, while the people murmured saying that He had visited to the home of a sinner.

There something amazing happened. A great transformation was taking place in Zacchaeus’ heart. Zacchaeus realized that he was a sinner. He had made a lot of wealth by unfair means, which he realized was not right in the sight of God. The guilt of his sin was crushing him. He could no longer hide it from the Saviour. He wanted to testify, “He said, ‘Lord, the half of my property I give to the poor; and if I have taken anything from any man fraudulently, I restore fourfold.’ Jesus replied, ‘This day salvation is come to this house.’”

Zacchaeus received Jesus, as his Lord and Saviour, repented for his sins and thus received salvation instantly. You and I are all indeed like Zacchaeus, of little stature spiritually, heading towards eternal death! The only way to escape this doom and disaster is to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour and atone for our sins for if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Dear reader, do you have the assurance of salvation? If not, repent for your sins, trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and receive the assurance of salvation right now!

FLEE FROM THE WRATH TO COME!

Barack Hussein Obama was elected the 44^th President of the United States of America to become the first Black American to occupy the country’s highest office and to live in the Whitehouse. What helped Obama in the polls phenomenally was the crisis ridden U.S. economy which assumed critical proportions in the recent past. Many premier banks and financial institutions went into liquidation not only in the U.S. but also in other nations. There were layoffs, increase in unemployment and suicides worldwide.

The Bible speaks about a major crisis of unprecedented magnitude that would plague the world sooner than later. At that time the world will witness the coming to power of a mysterious and a terrible person known in the Scripture as ‘Antichrist’ (1.John 2:18).

Before that, the Church, which is the gathering of all those who have trusted in Christ and received forgiveness, will be taken away from the earth. The historic event is called ‘rapture’. After that event, the Antichrist will be given power “over every tribe, tongue and nation” (Rev. 13:7). He will control the world’s economy and it will flourish and prosper under him. He will make a seven year peace accord with Israel and will break it after three and half years. He will introduce a world religious system and demand worship as God. No one will be able to buy or sell anything without the mark of the beast on his right hand or forehead.

The time is flying towards that perilous time of that ‘Great Tribulation’, a time such as that has never been experienced from the world’s beginning until now, nor ever will be. Many will come claiming that it is Jesus Christ and deceive many. Great wars, cataclysms and pestilences will characterise the time. Those who reject Christ will not be part of the rapture and will undergo horrendous sufferings; many will desire death but will not be able to die.

The Bible warns us of that perilous time and calls us to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour and flee from the coming wrath. Membership in a Church in not going to help us on that day. The Church is the body of Christ and each born again Christian is a member of that mystical body. The question is whether you belong to that mystical body or not. If you have not received the Lord Jesus Christ into your heart, I urge you to do it right now and be a partaker of the ‘rapture’. Today Christ is ready to receive you, pardon you, justify you and pick you for an eternal inheritance. He will in no wise reject if you go to Him today. O! Let’s flee from the wrath to come!   (Originally written in 2008)

THE RUBBLES BELOW AND ETERNAL MANSIONS ABOVE

In recent times billionaires who are among India’s richest by Forbes Magazine are vying each other to build luxury mansions with extravagance, hitherto unheard of. Their wealth is spread across huge industrial establishments, personal islands, cosy apartments in several cities around the globe, aircrafts and yachts fitted according to personal specifications. It does not stop there. A sky scrapper is coming up with features such as an infinity pool on the top floor, a helipad and a wine cellar; with 9.5 metre high ceiling fitted with latest contrivances of a standard that is not seen before, claims the project developer. Man in his opulence fails to realize that a minor cataclysm can convert the whole structure into a heap of rubbles within seconds.

But Oh! The pride of man; the true and living God has no place in his life. What does it profit him if he looses his soul? Without God, he is going to be consigned to eternal fire! But who says that he does not believe in god? Yes, he has his god in his designer showcase; he has a god in his ring; he has a god in his adornment. But alas! God is not in his heart, which is the rightful place for the eternal God to dwell.

About two thousand years ago Jesus Christ came down and lived on this earth for about thirty three years. He introduced to His disciples, the true and the Living God and the only way to go to heaven. Before His death on the cross, He encouraged His disciples saying, “Let not your hearts be troubled. In My Father’s house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”

To the troubled heart of His disciples, faith in Him was prescribed as the sure medicine. Heaven is the Father’s house and it is a place of mansions – lasting eternal dwellings, where Christ, Himself shall be present. To those who perish in hell, this is foolishness.

But whosever believes in Him (Jesus Christ) will receive eternal life. Christ will come again and raise them that are dead from their graves and those who are alive shall be caught up together with them in the clouds and escort them to the eternal mansions above.

Dear reader, do you have place in the eternal mansions? Do you have the assurance of salvation? If not so, consecrate the Lord Jesus Christ into your heart today!

ARE YOU BETROTHED?

The Jewish marriage occurs in two distinct stages, betrothal ‘Kiddushin’ followed by ‘Nissuin’, the marriage itself. In the interval between the betrothal and the marriage, which last for one year, the bride would spend her time in preparation and purification. She wore a veil whenever she went out in public, intimating that she was betrothed. She was thus considered being purchased by the bridegroom with a bride-price, and stood consecrated to her groom.

Then on, the young bride lived in anticipation of the imminent return of her beloved bridegroom. She does not when he will return, so she kept a constant vigil. Every night she lit an oil lamp and placed in a conspicuous place before retiring to bed.

The Hebrew word ‘Nissuin’, means ‘to take’, or ‘to abduct’. The idea was to literally steal his bride away from the house, which added thrill to the occasion. All Jewish brides longed to be stolen away by her prince.

The Lord Jesus Christ has already paid the bride-price, His precious blood shed on the cross. When God looked down on earth, He saw man in his fallen, ruined, sinful state heading for the unquenchable fire in hell. God therefore sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ into this world two thousand years ago to redeem man from his fallen state. Jesus offered Himself on the cross as a propitiation for your sins. He was buried, but He rose again on the third day. Then He ascended to heaven. He has gone to prepare a place for all those who trust in Him for their salvation. He promised to come back to take His redeemed to the mansions on high above.

Those who have repented (turned away from their sins and confessed them) and put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ are betrothed to Christ. Jesus will come soon to snatch away His betrothed Bride. This event will take place at a time when we least expect it. For this reason, He instructs us to be always ready and prepared, as His coming is near! He will appear any day, any moment!

Dear reader! Are you betrothed to Christ? If not, repent for your sins, confess them and receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour and Lord right now and become His betrothed who can be sure of a place with Him all eternity.

THE OFFENDER AND THE AFFECTIONATE SEEKER

A young girl left her mother and lived waywardly. She lived in sin and was heading to hell. An elderly woman who happened to meet the young girl, advised her to get back to her mother and escape from the wretched life she lived. The girl replied telling that she was too wretched to be accepted back by her Mom. But when the mother heard of it, she forgave her daughter and rushed money for her immediate return.

God, who is more compassionate and loving, looks forward to the return of every man and woman, with repentant hearts without least delay. The loving God stands with His outstretched arms to receive back every penitent sinner.

When Adam fell in sin, God did not tarry in heaven waiting for Adam to come searching for Him. But God immediately rushed to the earth seeking Adam to save him from eternal death. “Adam”, God called man and asked him, “Where are you?” But the man hid himself in the bushes of the garden. Adam dashed to the ground all the blessings and privileges by his disobedience and was attempting to hide from the eyes of his Creator. It should have been Adam’s duty to cry to the Creator for mercy as he was the offender.

But God sought after the offender, “Adam, where are you?” God sought Adam not to send him to hell for his rebellion, but to save him from the punishment for his disobedience, from the torments of eternal hellfire, the rightful place for sinners, the rightful place for you and me. But God does not desire anyone to land in hell, but all to experience the joy of salvation. That is why God sent His only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who took upon Himself the punishment of your sins and my sins on the cross.

What love is this! What compassion is this! What grace is this!

Yes. It is true and worthy of all acceptation that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, you and me. For the very purpose, He bore our sins in His own body on the cross. The Lord Jesus Christ was absolutely holy and sinless and yet He chose our place on the cross to set us free from the punishment of our sin.

Dear reader, if you truly confess your sins to God and believe in your heart, that the Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins, and rose again for your justification, you will receive eternal life right now. May this by your memorable experience!

JESUS, THE INVINCIBLE CONQUEROR

It was a Palm Sunday when the Lord Jesus Christ rode down the slopes of the Olivet and entered the city of Jerusalem triumphantly, just a few days before His crucifixion. He was well aware of what was in store for Him there, and He foretold to His disciples that He shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: and they shall scourge Him, and put Him to death: and on the third day He shall rise again (Luke 18:32-33). In precise fulfillment of the prophecy of Zechariah, at His command, His disciples brought an ass with her colt (Matthew 21:1-3), put on them their clothes and set the Lord thereon, where never man sat.

His triumphal entry was not marked by any kind of show of power and pomp but of meekness and lowliness. Prophet Zechariah said: "Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your King comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt, the foal of an ass" (Zechariah 9:9).

And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the tree and strawed them in the way” (Mark 11:8). Spreading of the garments in the way was the ancient way of recognition of one's royalty (2 Kings 9:13). The mob marched by taking palm branches and shouting "Hosanna!" (John 12:13). Palm branches were the symbol of expression of victory in the Biblical times. Those who led the procession and those who followed shouted saying “Hosanna: Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord: Blessed is the Kingdom of our father David, that comes in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the Highest”, which means “save us, Lord, who lives in Heaven”.

We see that a few days later, the mob cried for His blood, saying, “Crucify Him, Crucify Him”. The Lord Jesus being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, was taken, and by wicked hands crucified and slain… (Acts 2:23-24). He was cut off from the land of the living: for the transgression of His people was He stricken, to save mankind from the jaws of eternal death. The chief priests and the Pharisees were busy securing the sepulchre as best as they could, by sealing the sepulchre and setting a guard with the help of Pilate the Roman governor. But by conquering death, the Lord victoriously rose from the grave on the third day as He had foretold. Jesus said, “No man takes My life from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again” (John 10:18).

All those who confess their sins and trust in the Lord Jesus for their salvation will share in the victory won by Christ over sin and death. Apostle Paul speaks about the victory of the believing Christians. “We shall all be changed at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye that those saints who are dead in Christ would be raised in glory first, followed by those alive in Christ. Then shall be fulfilled the saying, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave where is thy victory?” Dear reader, do you have the hope of eternal life beyond this life on the earth, if not confess your sins and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ right now and be saved.

JESUS, THE GREAT HIGH PRIEST

It is Finished”, Jesus cried with a loud voice and yielded up the ghost. It was the cry of triumph, which echoed into the heavens. At that very moment was heard a sharp ripping noise of the veil of the temple into twain, from the top to the bottom, which separated the “holy of holies”. The price for our redemption from sin was fully paid and the most holy place did lay open and the temple service and all the rituals associated with it became superfluous. The worshippers no longer require a high priest to sacrifice animals, but they could approach God directly through the Lord Jesus Christ. A new and living way was opened for the whole humanity for the cleansing of their sins. Extraordinary events that followed the crucifixion of Christ on the cross were that the earth did quake and the rocks rent and the graves were opened; and many of the bodies of the saints which slept arose and so on.

The office of the high priest can be traced to Aaron, the brother of Moses, of the tribe of Levi (Exodus 28:1; Numbers 18:7). The high priest had to offer a sin offering not only for the sin of the whole congregation, but for himself also (Leviticus 4:3-21). The most important duty of the high priest was to conduct the service on the day of atonement, every year. The high priest alone was allowed to enter into the most holy place inside the veil to stand before God. After making the sacrifice for himself and for the people, the high priest then brought the blood into the holy of holies and sprinkled it on the mercy seat of God's throne (Leviticus 16:14-15).

But Jesus Christ our Lord being come a high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood, entered into the holy presence of God and obtained eternal redemption for us. Unlike Aaron, who had to repeat the ritual year after year on the day of atonement, Jesus, our great High Priest by His One Sacrifice of Himself entered into the presence of God. The Lord Jesus as a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God is all sufficient to intercede on behalf of the people.

Unlike Aaronic priesthood, Lord Jesus' priesthood is unique in that He is the eternal Word, who became man, tasted death for the salvation of everyone who calls upon Him and serves as our high priest (Hebrews 2:9). Jesus is greater than any Old Testament priests and qualifies to be called “the great high priest” for numerous reasons. He is God manifested in the flesh, and by His one offering of Himself, He has perfected forever them that are sanctified (Hebrews 10:14); His priesthood is eternal (Hebrews 7:24); His sacrifice is “once for all sacrifice” and does not require to be repeated; He is a merciful and compassionate high priest; His offering was perfect and accepted of God, granting access to the sinner to enter into God's holy presence; Jesus not only fulfils the type of the Old Testament high priests but surpasses it in its scope and in His perpetuity of office.

Dear reader, if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in your heart that God has raised Jesus from the dead, and confess your sins to Him, you will be saved. Behold! Now is the accepted time, now is the time of your salvation.
