END-TIME WARS SERIES – PART 2 (ISAIAH 17) - THE COMING DESTRUCTION OF DAMASCUS: A PROPHECY YET TO BE FULFILLED

INTRODUCTION: CONTINUING THE JOURNEY THROUGH END-TIME PROPHECIES

In Part 1 of this series, we examined the prophecy concerning the War of Elam, recorded in the Book of Jeremiah 49:34–39. That prophecy speaks of a devastating judgment against Elam, a region widely associated with parts of modern Iran.

We saw that the prophecy foretells the breaking of Elam’s military power and the scattering of its people among the nations, followed by a future restoration in the latter days. Many students of biblical prophecy believe this event could occur in connection with growing tensions involving Iran in the modern Middle East.

In this second article, we move to another remarkable prophecy—the destruction of Damascus, recorded in the Book of Isaiah chapter 17.

This prophecy is astonishing for one simple reason: Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. For thousands of years, armies have conquered it, empires have ruled it, and wars have been fought around it—but the city has never been completely destroyed.

Yet the Bible declares that a day is coming when Damascus will cease from being a city and will become a ruinous heap.

With the modern Middle East experiencing constant conflict, the question naturally arises:

Could this prophecy soon be fulfilled?

The Prophecy of Damascus in Isaiah 17

The prophecy begins with a striking declaration.

“The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.”
— Isaiah 17:1

This verse immediately captures attention.

The prophet Isaiah, writing more than 2,700 years ago, declared that Damascus would one day cease to exist as a functioning city.

The Hebrew language used in this passage suggests sudden and devastating destruction.

The prophecy continues:

“The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.”
— Isaiah 17:2

The passage describes surrounding regions becoming desolate.

The prophecy then turns its attention to Israel.

“The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus.”
— Isaiah 17:3

This indicates that the destruction of Damascus may occur during a broader regional conflict involving Israel.

Damascus: A City of Ancient History

To understand the significance of this prophecy, it is helpful to consider the history of Damascus.

Damascus is widely regarded as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth.

The city has existed for thousands of years and has been ruled by numerous empires, including:

  • the Arameans
  • the Assyrians
  • the Babylonians
  • the Persians
  • the Greeks
  • the Romans
  • Islamic empires
  • the Ottoman Empire
  • modern Syria

Despite countless wars and invasions, Damascus has never been completely destroyed.

Yet the prophecy of Isaiah declares that a day will come when the city will be reduced to ruins.

Damascus in the Bible

Damascus appears frequently throughout the Bible.

One of the earliest references occurs in the Book of Genesis.

Abraham’s servant is described as coming from Damascus.

Later, Damascus became the capital of the Aramean kingdom, often in conflict with Israel.

For example, in the Second Book of Kings we read about wars between Israel and Syria.

The city was eventually conquered by the Assyrian Empire, yet it continued to exist.

Even after centuries of conquest and conflict, Damascus survived.

This makes Isaiah’s prophecy even more remarkable.

Damascus in Modern Times

Today Damascus is the capital of Syria, a nation that has experienced tremendous turmoil in recent decades.

The Syrian civil war, which began in 2011, has devastated large portions of the country.

Multiple groups have been involved in the conflict, including:

  • the Syrian government
  • rebel forces
  • extremist groups
  • foreign military powers

The war has drawn in numerous outside nations.

Countries such as Russia, Iran, Turkey, and the United States have all played roles in the conflict.

Israel has also conducted numerous airstrikes inside Syria, particularly targeting Iranian military infrastructure near Damascus.

These developments have turned Syria into a central battlefield for regional power struggles.

Why Damascus Is Strategically Important

Damascus sits at a strategic crossroads in the Middle East.

Its location places it near several important regions:

  • Israel to the south
  • Lebanon to the west
  • Iraq to the east
  • Turkey to the north

Because of this location, the city has long been an important military and political center.

Control of Damascus has historically meant influence over the surrounding region.

Today, the presence of foreign military forces and advanced weapons systems in Syria has increased the potential for a large-scale conflict involving Damascus.

Possible Scenarios for the Destruction of Damascus

While the Bible clearly predicts the destruction of Damascus, it does not specify exactly how the event will occur.

Several possibilities are often discussed.

One possibility is a major regional war involving Israel and its enemies.

If such a conflict escalated dramatically, Damascus could become a primary target due to its military significance.

Another possibility involves weapons stockpiles or military installations located near the city.

Explosions involving such facilities could cause catastrophic damage.

Some analysts also discuss the potential use of advanced weapons or unconventional warfare, which could devastate large areas of the city.

Although these possibilities remain speculative, they demonstrate that the scenario described in Isaiah is no longer impossible in the modern world.

The Connection to Other Prophecies

The destruction of Damascus may also connect to other prophecies about the last days.

For example, the Book of Ezekiel describes a future invasion of Israel by a coalition of nations that includes Persia (modern Iran).

“Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them.”
— Ezekiel 38:5

Interestingly, Syria is not prominently mentioned in that coalition.

Some prophecy scholars suggest that the destruction of Damascus could weaken Syria so severely that it no longer plays a major role in the later invasion described in Ezekiel.

While this interpretation is debated, it highlights the possibility that these prophecies may be connected.

The Signs of the Last Days

The Bible teaches that the period leading up to the return of the Lord Jesus Christ will be marked by increasing global instability.

The Lord Jesus Christ warned about these conditions in the Gospel of Matthew.

“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars… For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.”
— Matthew 24:6–7

These words remind readers that the world will experience growing conflict before the end of the age.

Similarly, the apostle Paul warned about difficult times in the last days.

In the Second Epistle to Timothy we read:

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.”
— 2 Timothy 3:1

These passages suggest that increasing turmoil in the world should not surprise those who study biblical prophecy.

Why Bible Prophecy Matters

Some people wonder why the Bible contains so many prophecies.

One reason is that fulfilled prophecy demonstrates the reliability of Scripture.

One Biblical prophecy that was already fulfilled just approximately 80 years ago is the return of the Jewish people to their homeland.

In the Book of Ezekiel 37, the prophet describes Israel being restored after a long period of dispersion.

In 1948, the modern nation of Israel was reborn—an event many see as a fulfillment of that prophecy.

These example show why many Christians believe that the remaining prophecies of the Bible will also be fulfilled in the very near future. There are thousands of prophecies mentioned in the Bible that have already been fulfilled.

Because of this, many Christians believe that the prophecies about the future will also come true.

The Coming Tribulation

According to the Bible, the world is moving toward a period known as the Tribulation.

This period is described in detail in the Book of Revelation.

During this time, the earth will experience unprecedented upheaval, including:

  • global wars
  • famine
  • natural disasters
  • persecution of believers

These events will culminate in the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Hope Offered by the Lord Jesus Christ

While the Bible warns about coming judgment, it also offers hope.

The central message of the Bible is the gospel—the good news of salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Bible teaches that every person has sinned and fallen short of God’s perfect standard.

But God loves humanity so deeply that He provided a way for forgiveness.

More than two thousand years ago, the Lord Jesus Christ came into the world.

He lived a sinless life and willingly died on the cross for the sins of humanity.

Three days later, the Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

The apostle Paul summarized this message in the First Epistle to the Corinthians:

“Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:3–4

Anyone who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ and trusts Him for forgiveness can receive eternal life.

A Personal Invitation

If you are reading this article and have never placed your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Bible invites you to turn to Him.

The Epistle to the Romans says:

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
— Romans 10:13

Salvation is not earned through religion or good works.

It is received by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for our sins and rose again.

Looking Ahead to Part 3

In the next article in this series, we will explore one of the most dramatic prophecies in the Bible:

The Gog–Magog Invasion, recorded in the Book of Ezekiel chapters 38–39.

This prophecy describes a massive coalition of nations—including Persia (modern Iran)—that will invade Israel in the last days.

According to Scripture, this invasion will end with a powerful and supernatural intervention by God Himself.

Understanding these prophecies helps us see that the Bible is not merely an ancient book of history.

It is a living message that reveals God’s plan for the future—and the salvation offered through the Lord Jesus Christ.

JESUS THE PASSOVER LAMB

After the pale rays of the setting sun vanished from the land of Goshen in Egypt, the Jewish households killed their Passover Lambs in twilight. It was a few centuries ago, on the 14th day of Nisan that year in the Jewish calendar. The selected lambs were one year old male without blemish. The blood of the slaughtered lambs was to be sprinkled on the doorposts of their houses and the meat roasted and eaten without breaking any of its bones (Exodus 12:46). The LORD would pass through the land that night and slay all the first-born of the Egyptian households. When the LORD sees the blood on the door posts of the houses of the children of Israel, He will pass over them and all the inmates of those houses would be spared from death.

And the children of Israel observed the commandment of the Lord and stayed indoors on that dreadful night. The LORD smote all the firstborn in the Egyptian homes including Pharaoh that sat on the throne. And there was a great cry in the land of Egypt that night, for there was not a single house where there was no death. That event marked the redemption of the Hebrews from Egyptian bondage and death. The slain lambs were the prototype of Jesus Christ, who came on this earth about sixteen hundred years later.

Exactly on the 14th day of Nisan, at the age of Thirty Three, the Lord Jesus Christ, our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed on the cross (1 Corinthians 5:7). He shed His precious blood for the remission of your sins and my sins – to save you and me from the slavery of sin, Satan and death. John the Baptist introduced this Lamb of God (John 1:29). Apostle Peter, refers the precious blood of Christ, “as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:19). Apostle John speaks about a Lamb seen in heaven as if it had been slain (Revelation 5:6). The blood of this Lamb is to be applied and appropriated by the sinner - you and I to escape from the soon coming judgement.

When our Lord was on the earth, His life was under intense scrutiny by the Pharisees, Sadducees, the scribes, and the religious leaders, but none could find any sin or blemish in His life (2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 John 3:5; 1 Peter 1:18-19, John 19:4). He committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth (1 Peter 2:22). The Father was well pleased in the spotless life of His beloved Son. As prophesied, “a bone of him was not broken” (John 19:36). He thus fulfilled all the criteria of the Passover Lamb, who is ordained of God to deliver you and I from eternal death! You and I rightfully deserve to be cast into the hell fire for our sins. But God in His grace and mercy sent His beloved Son, Lord Jesus Christ into this world in order that we shall receive the remission of our sins by His shed blood on the cross.

Dear reader, if you have not yet received the Lord Jesus Christ as your Passover Lamb and applied and appropriated His precious blood into your heart by faith, you may do so right now; lest you enter eternal death – everlasting torments in the fiery furnace of hail shall pass over from your life and you shall receive life everlasting. Are you washed by the precious blood of the Passover Lamb?

FLEE FROM THE WRATH TO COME!

Barack Hussein Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States of America to become the first Black American to occupy the country’s highest office and to live in the Whitehouse. What helped Obama in the polls phenomenally was the crisis ridden U.S. economy which assumed critical proportions in the recent past. Many premier banks and financial institutions went into liquidation not only in the U.S. but also in other nations. There were layoffs, increase in unemployment and suicides worldwide.

The Bible speaks about a major crisis of unprecedented magnitude that would plague the world sooner than later. At that time the world will witness the coming to power of a mysterious and a terrible person known in the Scripture as ‘Antichrist’ (1.John 2:18).

Before that, the Church, which is the gathering of all those who have trusted in Christ and received forgiveness, will be taken away from the earth. The historic event is called ‘rapture’. After that event, the Antichrist will be given power “over every tribe, tongue and nation” (Rev. 13:7). He will control the world’s economy and it will flourish and prosper under him. He will make a seven year peace accord with Israel and will break it after three and half years. He will introduce a world religious system and demand worship as God. No one will be able to buy or sell anything without the mark of the beast on his right hand or forehead.

The time is flying towards that perilous time of that ‘Great Tribulation’, a time such as that has never been experienced from the world’s beginning until now, nor ever will be. Many will come claiming that it is Jesus Christ and deceive many. Great wars, cataclysms and pestilences will characterise the time. Those who reject Christ will not be part of the rapture and will undergo horrendous sufferings; many will desire death but will not be able to die.

The Bible warns us of that perilous time and calls us to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour and flee from the coming wrath. Membership in a Church in not going to help us on that day. The Church is the body of Christ and each born again Christian is a member of that mystical body. The question is whether you belong to that mystical body or not. If you have not received the Lord Jesus Christ into your heart, I urge you to do it right now and be a partaker of the ‘rapture’. Today Christ is ready to receive you, pardon you, justify you and pick you for an eternal inheritance. He will in no wise reject if you go to Him today. O! Let’s flee from the wrath to come!   (Originally written in 2008)

THE RUBBLES BELOW AND ETERNAL MANSIONS ABOVE

In recent times billionaires who are among India’s richest by Forbes Magazine are vying each other to build luxury mansions with extravagance, hitherto unheard of. Their wealth is spread across huge industrial establishments, personal islands, cosy apartments in several cities around the globe, aircrafts and yachts fitted according to personal specifications. It does not stop there. A sky scrapper is coming up with features such as an infinity pool on the top floor, a helipad and a wine cellar; with 9.5 metre high ceiling fitted with latest contrivances of a standard that is not seen before, claims the project developer. Man in his opulence fails to realize that a minor cataclysm can convert the whole structure into a heap of rubbles within seconds.

But Oh! The pride of man; the true and living God has no place in his life. What does it profit him if he looses his soul? Without God, he is going to be consigned to eternal fire! But who says that he does not believe in god? Yes, he has his god in his designer showcase; he has a god in his ring; he has a god in his adornment. But alas! God is not in his heart, which is the rightful place for the eternal God to dwell.

About two thousand years ago Jesus Christ came down and lived on this earth for about thirty three years. He introduced to His disciples, the true and the Living God and the only way to go to heaven. Before His death on the cross, He encouraged His disciples saying, “Let not your hearts be troubled. In My Father’s house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”

To the troubled heart of His disciples, faith in Him was prescribed as the sure medicine. Heaven is the Father’s house and it is a place of mansions – lasting eternal dwellings, where Christ, Himself shall be present. To those who perish in hell, this is foolishness.

But whosever believes in Him (Jesus Christ) will receive eternal life. Christ will come again and raise them that are dead from their graves and those who are alive shall be caught up together with them in the clouds and escort them to the eternal mansions above.

Dear reader, do you have place in the eternal mansions? Do you have the assurance of salvation? If not so, consecrate the Lord Jesus Christ into your heart today!
