THE PANDEMIC AND THE FACE MASKS

The unexpected outbreak of the pandemic in recent times in many parts of India was alarming. Young and old alike got infected. At least a couple of thousand people lost their lives around the nations of the world within a short span of time. No vaccine has yet been invented to combat this deadly virus. This has created great scare and chaos. When people saw someone coughing or sneezing, for any reason whatever, they ran for cover fearing immediate infection and death. The people were frightened beyond measure. Schools and colleges were closed and many stayed indoors. Those who ventured out wore facemasks, which have become a common sight everywhere.

Yes, you and I are afraid of this deadly virus and of death of course.

Several centuries ago a shepherd boy lived in Israel. He tended his flock day and night in the thick valleys and mountains of Palestine where wild beasts lurked for its prey. As he grew up, he was hounded by a blood thirsty king. This shepherd came face to face with death several times in his life. But he was unaffected. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, he said. Though the terrors of death encompass him, though life’s journey warrants through the dark shadow of the valley of death, and though he carries with him the death warrant, yet he fears no evil. It does not matter to him, for he fears no evil.

Why does he say that he fears no evil even when he passes through the valley of the shadow of death? Because, he says that God is with him. Death cannot separate him from the love of God and therefore he does not fear any evil in physical death. Not only that, he adds ‘the rod and staff of God’ will comfort him. His Word and His Spirit will comfort them that trusts in Him. God has not guaranteed us protection from death but from fear. There is a journey ahead of death to a land where there is neither sorrow nor death. He will take us to that glorious land if we put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God.

Why should you and I trust in Jesus Christ? Because, neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish in eternal hellfire but have eternal life. God sent His Son into the world to save you and me through Him. If you trust in Jesus Christ the Son of God that He died for your sins on the cross, you shall be saved. Are you saved?    (Originally written in 2021)
